Howard,

My guess is more "un-informed talking heads". I'm more and more under the belief that certain golfers are "pre-disposed" to be really long, and others will simply be "average" in length. The obsession over length that seems to have taken over golf in the last few years seems almost unhealthy. The game (especially at the highest levels) is still soooo much about putting, and that is in turn related to being really good from 140 yards and in. I contend that the longest hitters aren't usually the straightest (while the shorter ones tend to be straigher), so they're not hitting approach shots from the short grass. There is some sort of "equalizer" there as a result.

Hope you're doing well.

Food for thought . . .

So far in '08, Tiger Woods is more accurate from 150-175 yards (21'11") than from 75-100 yards (23'11").

The reason you can't sustain the lag is because you are so eager to make the club move fast (a reaction to the intent of "hitting it far"). So on a full shot you throw it away too early, which doesn't happen for your short chip. (bts)

My stats so far this year follow: 175-200 yards (100 yards, 7 inches, 2 millimeters), 75-100 yards (110 yards, 12 inches, 1.3 millimeters). So I follow the same trend as Tiger, I'm better off laying up to my money distance of 185 yards. I can't believe how far I can hit a bladed wedge! Sorry if the measurements are confusing, I prefer mixing in metric when feasible.

If you want to see what the tour players are doing, go to pgatour.com/r/players, click on whomever you wish then click on complete stats on the right. If you scroll down you will see the shotlink stats, including average distance to the hole from various ranges of distance.

Matt
