BUT IS IT A RIDE WORTH TAKING?

I'm not spoofing you guys. These are serious questions regarding power and precision.

The Bobby Jones quote about Leo Diegel and B. Swisher employing a "shut face method" and "soundly thrashing" him in tournaments has me intrigued. I'm hoping you can help me decode that technique using our common TGM insights.

If I am at impact fix with my handle and shaft way ahead of the ball, I can make the club stay closed or shut ("square") by rolling my back shoulder straight up and down by forcing the clubface to look at the ball and "ferris wheel" straight up and down.

After the backswing, I can ferris wheel the shoulder down or RF thrust down. The club face is a horizontal hinge, I think, and there is no layback. As long as the clubface is closed to the target line and the ball is middle my stance or back, there is a huge chicken wing finish and a ball that really, really flies like a 145 yard range ball 9 iron straight to the target.

I can do it with every club from a small chip to a full driver. A light flvh (flat left vertical hinge) into the chicken wing keeps the ball to the target line.

In that technique, my plane or ferris wheel is not inclined and there is no swivel. I can do almost the same thing with the ball using impact fix, RFT and the hitter's angled hinge or straight-line thrust. It is a more complex move and the ball doesn't yet hug the target line.

I'm sure I have missed several crucial TGM concepts using the ferris wheel technique. The great irony is that I could not have discovered the effectiveness of that technique apart from the "basic motion" progression which I do with at least 100 balls several times a week and the magical right forearm, shoulder plane discussions and horizontal hinge insights.

I have read a lot of golf books. Several years ago, for a summer, I delved into Byron Nelson's life and thought I read that he employed a similar "shut face" method. I tried it and shot some high 70's rounds but could not maintain it not knowing the basic TGM facts as I do now, or at least the primacy of the plane, impact fix, and the horizontal hinge.

Insights are appreciated.

I think it comes down to either swivel or no swivel on the back swing. The downswing then becomes swivel or no swivel how else can you square the clubface? No swivel to the top shut clubface and swivel/roll to impact = hook city (assuming horizontal hinge). You could overide the closed clubface hook pattern at impact using angled or vertial hinges. So many options - thanks Homer.

MB, could you try the technique for a few shots to see if I'm missing something big?

Maybe it is a vertical hinge making contact prior to layback? But what makes it fly so far? Simple trapping?

I was not using the correct TGM terms to describe a very effective technique. Thanks to Darly, Jerry, OB Left, and Kevin for the insights.

The left wrist (front wrist) vertically cocks or is neutral, or uncocks before swiveling right or left with the aid of the forearm. Try it!

Now watch this video! Let's start with Lynn Blake's very simple video you can watch here:


If you swing or hit, you are cocking the left wrist and uncocking it by pulling the power package to discharge and fully swivel the left wrist to the left ear or by driving the front arm or primary lever. I use this stroke everywhere except within 150 yards and in.

If you start with a fully uncocked front wrist and pull or drive that wrist, you get a "chicken wing" if you don't folow through.
If you do follow through, you get a nice high finish.

The right forearm supports the primary lever and drives it in swing or hit. The support of the right forearm and the flatness of the uncocked left wrist is normally only experienced when both arms are straight. My guess is that the uncocked left wrist has fewer moving parts when driven through impact and therefore less power loss. More effective power transfer, and more consistent club head motion maintains accelleration. The de-lofting of the club adds distance as well. Yesterday, my short irons and chips were all 10 yards longer than normal.

You are going to have to help me with this. One of my golf friends states my driver game is "Strong like tractor," while my iron game is "dumb like bull."
How in the world do you get such distance with a 9 iron?

I can only tell you now and show you in August. Of course, Lefty could show you anytime.

Owing to my shorter front leg, I have a funny sense of physical balance. (Emotionally, I enjoy a great deal of imbalance, of course.) Once I get to top, I really concentrate and focus on driving pp #1 down. But my front leg starts out like our "S&T" brothers! My pushing down on pp#1 is smooth, smooth, smooth. I play with good golfers often, and they will tell me my swing is one of the smoothest they have ever seen. The reality is that I don't swing at all, but hit!

I also have a weird set of clubs, Jerry. I have a 10.5 clone Ping driver, a 14 degr. 3-wood, a 16.5 degr. 3 wood, a 24 degr. 5 wood, a 32 degr. 7 wood and a 40 degr. 9 wood. My handles are like a roll of quarters. The only irons I have are 7-LW, and the handles are thick and heavy. My clubs are very stable and pretty much swing themselves. I think balance is everything.

I take crap every round for my 7 and 9 woods. But, so far this year, I have won 4 "closest to the pins" in our various contests. I hardly move the club handle and simply aim the plane!!!!

Some guys hit their pw's further than I hit my 9 wood!

I'm not sure why but in the last two weeks, I have started to out drive our club pro and 3 previous club champions (2 championship flights, and 1 "B" flight). I slide the ball back on my drives and aim for the inside right quadrant and that Noodle (not Titleist) cooks and runs a lot! I've also gotten some really big tees and hit up! The courses are hard now and I get some big bounces!

I'm thinking about getting some pink graphite to match my socks just to screw with everyone minds even more.
