Seems to me this place, an others like it, are the 'modern' magazine. What you want to do in print can/is being done online now. The only difference is the organization of the site.

Create a secion on the site that is read only. Send out monthly emails linking to it.

Much simpler than a printed mag, much cheaper and folks can print off copies if they still want something on paper. Instant worldwide distribution for significantly less. Ordering/printing an e-mag wouldn't be hard if done by the user. PDF format or similar.

Of course you still have the 'editorial' and layout work that would take a fair amount of time, but could be done with much less labor. I'm sure there must be some members who are in/know the publishing business that could help out with some of the 'gotcha's' that this format might present, but otherwise - full steam ahead -
