Brian Gay Lack of Power?
Hey guys,
On Saturday one of the commentators at St Jude mentioned why he thought Brian was one of the shorter hitters on tour. He said it was because he did not use his legs to generate power and that he "sprung up" at impact straightening his legs which reduced power and thus distance?

Is this just a BS comment by a guy (Osterhouse?) that thinks he knows everything? As an amateur I would love to hit the ball like Brian, straight and predictible, all I need to do is get to the 150 marker in the middle of the fairway on every shot, and I'd lickin my chops....

But I guess Im confused as to why a good sized guy like Brian doesnt hit it farther. Is he basically just substituting more accuracy for better distance by keeping his legs quiet?

Thanks

It's a good question, I saw it on tv as well. I'm sure someone will chime in and educate us.

Inquiring minds want to know...!

Well Brian is online here a lot. I don't think he would agree that he has a "lack of power". Brian chooses to control his power. That is, he is sacrificing a few yards off the tee for more accuracy.

I think the stats prove it.

If you want to know how he does it, one of the biggies is the release he has chosen.

Which release point provides the greatest control; sweep, random, or snap?
Which provide the greatest distance?

Can Golf Announcers answer the above?

Brian prefers fairways over forests.

I agree, the guy is a great player, love the swing and his short game is to die for. I'd take that over scrambling around all day for pars.

Thanks Bagger

Brian is really golfing his ball, isn't he....really in control. His alignments & angles are so solid---jeez, I'd like to see some of that on one of my videos one day.

As for the TV announcer's commentaries on Brian's swing.....they're going to have to speak a little louder next time because it didn't appear Brian's Titleist ball heard anything those guys were spew..., errr, saying.

Search For Length
There is no question that Brian Gay gives up yardage to the field off the tee. But he's not the only one. For example, according to the Shotlink stats, Jim Furyk averages 273.1 yards. Brian averages 269.3. That's a difference of only 3.8 yards. And yet, you never hear that Jim is 'short.' All you hear about is his 'unique' swing.

Jim Furyk has never paid any attention to the naysayers.

Neither should Brian Gay.

It is a player's birthright to seek improvement in his Stroke, either its Power or its Precision or both. However, any considered change should first be geometrically-sound.

In my opinion, the 'solutions' offered last weekend from the TV tower fell woefully short of that standard.

Isn't that the truth. It's the golfer's tower of Babel.

The talking heads were "short" in many areas on that telecast. They got Kip and is brother mixed up. They mistaked Collard Greens for Alex Sloan. Everytime big Vern mentioned Brian's name he said, "Brian Gay, who has never won a tournament . . . " Kinda like all the goofballs who constantly had to give us the revelation that John F. Kerry was in 'Nam. Ok guys we got it!

Yeah Vern Brian has never won on Tour . . . and he ain't never had to pimp a stoopid mongoloidian TV show like Pirate Master. He probably ain't never sat in a TV tower and ate a case of Hostess King Dongs using the Magic of the Right Forearm. He probably ain't never combed three feet of hair from his left ear to his right ear to cover up the hole in his mullet. And I doubt he's ever chased his asprin with a jar of mayonase either.
