That's probably true in some cases (as a matter of fact, I'm sure it is), but it's too general a stance to be a flat across-the-board fact. I think that, particularly in sports, underdogs are often underdogs because they are underestimated, not untalented. A lot of people can relate to being counted out before they've had a chance to prove what they can do.
